For Artists — The Hope Anthology

FOR ARTISTS

I think we've made this all a bit bloody complicated.

You create beautiful art. Then apparently you also need to photograph it like David Bailey, film it like Wes Anderson, list it, keyword it, optimise it, feed various online marketplaces/social media platforms and persuade an algorithm you obviously can't speak to that it deserves to be seen…

Meanwhile, the person who might absolutely love it has to know exactly what to search for. Pet food? Easy. Next-day size 5 school shoes? Done.

Art doesn't really work like that….

Artists aren't product listings. People aren't search terms.

We've become extraordinarily good at search.
I'm not sure we've become better at discovery.

I know quite a lot about how we got here.

I've spent most of my working life between creativity and technology. I need to feed my love of Gustav Klimt as much as I need to feed my geek. A degree in IT & Art. Master's in Librarianship. Then the biggest chunk of my career delivering major digital projects for Dyson, B&Q, Vodafone and Sky (to name a few…). Do you know how many specialists it took to launch something like an iPhone twenty years ago? Hundreds!!!

Now we routinely expect one artist to do nearly all of it. Digital has made extraordinary things possible from a kitchen table, I love that! BUT Somewhere along the way, possibility became expectation.

I bloody adore tech, let's get that clear. I just want it to stay a tool for the humans on either side of it — not keep being the overlord.

Let's not lose a foot.

The Industrial Revolution transformed making. That's right, fellow history nerds. People built systems around it that rewarded scale, speed, repetition and profit. And they still do.

Back then: industrial production. Could ours be digital discovery? Different century. Lower chance of losing a foot under a loom. Same feeling sometimes: Keep running. Keep feeding it. Keep up.

Your art matters before it performs.

The Anthology shows the work. It does not measure it.

So why The Hope Anthology?

It was never built around the question:
"How do we get independent artists more exposure?"

Because there is another human on the other side of all this. The humans that want and need your art. Sometimes life splits you open. Sometimes you're rebuilding it. Sometimes you've just had a bloody awful month. And sometimes absolutely nothing is wrong.

Art can mark something enormous, say something we couldn't quite say, give us something beautiful to have around us — or simply stop us because we love it. Sometimes the joy is in making something ourselves.

So the question became:

How do I help somebody find the art they never knew to look for?

The charities, organisations, communities and support networks already helping people through life. I want to use my years in digital and communication — alongside my own experience of some of those worlds — to build real human connections between them and the artists on Hope.

So what actually is it? The Hope Anthology.

A human-curated anthology of independent artists, created by a digital geek who is also an artist and a librarian. Get your head around that one.

To Keep

Finished work: art and objects people want to have.

To Make

Patterns and guides: for anyone to get creative with.

And two simple rules:

I don't ask visitors for their details.
I don't take their money.

I curate the work. Every artist and every piece reaches Hope through a human connection. If somebody finds something they want, Hope gets out of the way.

Your shop. Your customer. Your relationship.

Anyway. Now I need your help.

I've been building, testing and pulling Hope apart for well over a year.

Now I'm looking for the first fifty founding artists.

I'm not promising you sales or "exposure" right now, so I'm not asking you for any money. That would feel wrong. I want to get Hope out into the world in as many useful ways as I can, try different routes, learn what seems to work and keep building from there.

No grand guarantees. No commission. No exclusivity.

So, how does it work for you?

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps, and two of them are mine.

You are not building another shop, learning another platform or opening another account. Your side of this is deliberately small — and you won't be doing it on your own.

You send what you already have

Your product images — the same ones already on your shop, so what someone sees here is exactly what they find when they arrive. A short piece about you and why you make what you make. And links to the pieces you feel belong in the Anthology.

I'll be the human helping you put this together. You won't be emailing me a pile of files and hoping.

I build your profile

I write it up, place you in To Keep or To Make — or both — and show you before anything goes live. Nothing appears without you seeing it first.

Free for the founding year, and nothing renews on its own. What comes after it is a conversation, not a bill.

Everyone goes to your shop

Every link points out to where you already sell. You keep the sale, the customer and the relationship. I take nothing from it — not now, not later.

WHY THERE'S NO COMMISSION

I want your work to reach the people who need it. I don't need a cut of it to want that.

(I'm also a qualified librarian. I have strong feelings about collections that get ordered by who paid rather than by what's in them.)

Some of the people who could most use what you make may never find you through a search result. That's no fault of yours, and no lack of endless hours trying — it just is what it is.

Someone going through any part of a journey might want a reminder of what they've come through that doesn't announce it to everyone who walks into the room — something private, that means one thing to them and is simply a beautiful thing to everybody else. Someone else wants it said out loud, because they got here and they want it seen. And then there's the person buying a gift because they can't find the words, or the one who just wants an everyday anchor in a time when they need one.

Some of them do have someone alongside them too — a link worker, a recovery group, a mental health charity. Those supports can send someone to The Hope Anthology. What they can't do is send anyone straight into a shop.

So the Anthology sells nothing at all. That's what lets a link worker, for example, share it freely, and it's why anyone arriving on their own finds work chosen for what it carries rather than what performs.

It's also why I'll never take a cut of what you sell. Traditional platforms decide who gets seen by views and sales, and that's what sits behind what gets featured, what gets pushed, and what quietly sinks. I'd rather build something that has no opinion about what your art is intended for, or what it does — because I'm not the person looking for it or needing it. No commission, no customer data. It isn't a marketplace, it's an anthology.

BEING STRAIGHT WITH YOU

I can't promise you customers. (Yet!)

The Anthology is new, and I'd rather say that plainly than dress it up — you get asked to work for exposure often enough.

What I can tell you is what I'm doing about it. Fifty artists first. Then, relentlessly, the organisations already working with the people this is for. Then press, to let the everyday person who needs your art know we're here.

WHO'S WELCOME

You don't need social proof

I know how much of an artist's life gets spent trying to be seen, and how quickly that turns into the whole job. No follower count, no engagement rate, no press mention. The Anthology doesn't ask you to have won that fight first.

And if you have built an audience — good, that's yours, and you're just as welcome. It simply isn't the thing that decides it. What I'm looking for is work that carries something, and if you think yours does, I'd love to see it.

The one thing you do need is somewhere people can already buy from you. Everything here points outward to your own shop, so without one there's nothing for me to send anyone to.

THE QUESTION YOU'RE ACTUALLY ASKING

And after the founding year?

I don't know what it costs yet, and I'd rather say that than invent a number to make this easier to say yes to.

What I can tell you is the shape of it. It will never be a percentage of what you sell, so it can't go up because you had a good year. Nothing renews on its own and there's no card on file — at the end of the twelve months you decide, and if the answer is no, your listing comes down and your shop carries on exactly as it did before.

And I'd rather work out what's fair with the fifty people who've actually used it than pick a number now from a spreadsheet. You'll have had a year of knowing whether it was worth anything before anyone asks you for a penny.

THE BIT I HAVEN'T WORKED OUT

Somewhere for you to talk to each other

First, so it's said plainly: you are not competing with the other artists here. No algorithm decides whose work sits above whose, and nobody can pay to be moved up. That's for your customers to decide — the people you made it for. A machine doesn't know who they are. A person does.

So I want there to be a space for the artists in the Anthology to share what's working, what isn't, and what they've learned. I don't know what shape it should take yet, and I'd rather the founding artists worked with me to shape it than guess at it myself. If you have opinions about it, bring them — that's part of what I'm asking for.

The other part is your feedback, honestly given, through the year. That's genuinely the only thing I want from you that isn't already sitting on your shop.

No commission. No exclusivity. No change to how you already sell. Free for the founding year, and a say in what this becomes.
